Terno Sleeves - Denim
In our constant quest to unlearn and learn about our heritage, Wayawaya partnered with FilAm artist Keith LaFuente to create modernized iterations of Keith's Terno sleeve designs.
Terno sleeves are an iconic representation of Filipino fashion. The word "terno" from its Spanish translation means "to match", which originally the sleeves were intended to match a top and a skirt. The terno is also commonly known as "butterfly sleeves" because of its similar appearance to clipped butterfly wings.
Keith's use of everyday fabrics like denim and canvas is a subversive take on the terno sleeves' Spanish colonial origin. In our efforts to embrace our roots, we also strive to acknowledge and embrace the origins of our pre-colonial culture.
